British Columbia joined the Canadian Confederation as the sixth province in 1871. Its capital, Victoria, and its largest city, Vancouver, are both major cultural centres for poets, authors, artists, musicians, dancers, and actors as well as noteworthy academics, commentators, and creative thinkers. British Columbia’s 150th anniversary of its designation as a crown colony was celebrated in 2008 while Victoria’s 165th anniversary of its founding was also celebrated.
